Hensley

Hensley was selected No. 30 overall in last month’s First-Year Player Draft. He’ll get a $1.2 million bonus, well below the slot recommendation of $1.6 million. The two sides initially agreed at $1.6 million, but the Yankees ended up getting a discount because an MRI showed abnormalities in his right shoulder. However, it didn’t stop the Yankees from signing him, so it doesn’t appear to be a major concern.

The state of Oklahoma graduated Dylan Bundy and Archie Bradley to pro baseball last season and Hensley follows in their footsteps. Hensley, who has a great frame at 6'4'’, 220, has a solid fastball and a killer curve. He will have to develop another pitch or two and clean up his mechanics. If he can do so, he could be a steal for the Bombers.

Dr. Bryan Kelly, who performed Alex Rodriguez’s recent hip surgery, will do the procedure. It’s another tough break for Hensley, who was selected No. 30 overall by the Yankees last year, but had his bonus adjusted from $1.6 million to $1.2 million due to abnormalities in his right shoulder. If all goes well, he should be ready to join one of the team’s short-season affiliates later this summer.

Well, that’s a bummer. Hensley has had an awful time with injuries since being taken in the first round of the 2012 Draft, as missed a season following hip surgery and will now miss a second straight season after another Tommy John surgery. The 22-year-old also suffered multiple facial fractures and a broken jaw when he was assaulted last January. Obviously he faces another long road ahead, but he’s at least still plenty young enough to work his way back.

Hensley needed a second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery this past May and probably won’t be recovered until the second half of the 2017 season. The former first-round pick (30th overall, 2012) does have some intriguing minor league numbers, but a full bounceback will obviously be a big chore.

What an awful run of luck for Hensley, who was knocked unconscious and suffered multiple facial fractures and a broken jaw when he was assaulted back in January. Ranked by Baseball America as the Yanks’ No. 20 prospect, Hensley will miss 2015 and likely the beginning of 2016, as well.

Selected by the Yankees in the first round of the 2012 draft out of high school, Hensley missed the entire 2013 season and part of 2014 recovering from surgery on both hips. The 21-year-old made his season debut on June 21 in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he posted a 2.37 ERA and 23-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 19 innings before moving up to the New York-Penn League. In his first three starts with Staten Island, Hensley has allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks and struck out 11 batters over 8 2/3 innings.

The statement says “Ty was treated and released from the hospital and is presently recovering at home from the injuries he sustained after being knocked unconscious in this vicious attack.” Those injuries include multiple facial fractures and a broken jaw. Hensley, 21, was a first-round pick of the Yankees in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft out of an Oklahoma high school.
