Gómez now leads the Twins with four saves on the year and has picked up three of their past four. A whopping 11 relievers have earned a save for Minnesota in 2026, but Gómez is beginning to consolidate opportunities. He has been brilliant since joining the team from the Rays, but to keep getting ninth-inning chances, he can’t afford to be as shaky as he looked on Wednesday.

Gómez is one of many faces who have picked up a save for the Twins this year. All four of his saves have come since May 10, but Gómez isn’t running with the job. Minnesota’s closer situation remains a fantasy situation to avoid.

It was his first save as a member of the Twins after recording one with the Rays this year. Minnesota has spread around their sparse ninth-inning chances, and Justin Topa is the only reliever with multiple saves. This is a fantasy situation to avoid if possible, given the committee and lack of total opportunities.

Gómez averaged 95.1 mph with his 13 fastballs today and was at 95.5 mph during his four spring appearances with the Rays. Both are nice gains from the 93.8 mph he came in at last year. The Rays figure to carry Gómez as a middle reliever after picking him up from the White Sox in November.

Gómez heads to Tampa Bay to operate in a versatile swingman role after compiling a pedestrian 4.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 47/16 K/BB ratio across 48 1/3 innings over 12 appearances (nine starts) for the rebuilding White Sox last year. The 26-year-old former Yankees pitching prospect in an intriguing gamble for the Rays who seem to have an incredible track record of maximizing the value of these types of arms.

Gomez struck out five and walked none, but also allowed four home runs that accounted for all five of the runs against him. The 25-year-old flashed some intriguing potential in his big league stint, but he’ll end the regular season with a 5.17 ERA and 58/27 K/BB ratio in 62 2/3 innings. He’ll have to battle for a spot in the White Sox rotation next season.

The 25-year-old right-hander punched out four batters on the evening and didn’t allow a base on balls. He served up a solo homer to Jackson Merrill in the second inning then kept the Padres’ offense off the board until the sixth where Manny Machado smacked an RBI single to chase Gomez from the game. He then scored against the White Sox’ bullpen. Gomez got six whiffs on 74 pitches on the night, posting an underwhelming CSW of 24 percent. Now 3-3 on the season, he’ll bring a 4.92 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 53/27 K/BB ratio (56 2/3 innings) into his final start of the year on Friday against the Nationals in Washington.

Gómez averaged 94.8 mph with his fastball today, which is a new high for him as a starter. Even including his previous 12 relief appearances along with his six starts, he was 1.1 mph above his season average. Gómez probably wasn’t someone the White Sox were planning on carrying on their 40-man this winter, but a little uptick in stuff will give them something to think about. He has a 4.01 ERA and a 36/13 K/BB in 33 2/3 innings over seven starts.
