Two-time IndyCar winner Robbie Buhl and business partner Robert Citrone have announced the formation of a new team with an intent of entering the Indianapolis 500 this May.

According to a release on Buhl Sport Detroit’s website, Citrone/Buhl Autosport plans to make its debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on May 9 before attempting to qualify for the 500 later in the month. A driver and sponsor for the new entry have yet to be announced.

Buhl is no stranger to IndyCar. The Michigan native competed in 78 races between 1993-2004, including eight starts at the Indy 500. He has two career victories in the series (New Hampshire in 1997 and Walt Disney World Speedway in 2000).

Following his retirement from driving in 2004, Buhl served as an ownership partner of Dreyer & Rienbold Racing through 2013. The team has no affiliation with Buhl’s new entry.

Citrone is the founder of Discovery Capital Management and is the largest minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. His son, Nick, and Buhl’s brother, Tom, also will be partners in the new team.

“The underlying goal of Citrone/Buhl Autosport is to be competitive while partnering with the right people to deliver results,” the team’s release said. “The Citrones and Buhls see this as the start of a continued racing endeavor with aspiration of more entries at more races in the future.”
