Recent Indy Lights racer Felix Rosenqvist will make his debut in the DTM championship in Moscow with Mercedes next week, replacing the Formula 1-bound Esteban Ocon.

Rosenqvist has enjoyed ties with Mercedes for many years, winning the FIA European Formula 3 Championship last year before moving into Indy Lights with Belardi Auto Racing for 2016.

The Swede won his second race in the IndyCar feeder series at St. Petersburg, and completed a weekend double in Toronto with victories on Saturday and Sunday in what looks set to have been his last appearance in the series.

Besides Indy Lights, the two-time Macau Grand Prix winner has also been racing in the Blancpain GT Sprint Series and was Mercedes’ designated reserve driver in DTM.

Mercedes announced on Wednesday that Rosenqvist would be replacing Ocon for the next DTM round in Moscow, taking the Frenchman’s seat with ART.

“Getting the opportunity to race in the DTM is very exciting for me,” Rosenqvist said.

“I’ve been a part of the Mercedes-AMG family for many years, and this was always one of my primary targets.

“It is going to be a real challenge, joining such an incredibly competitive championship mid-season, and I know I will have a lot to learn in a very short amount of time.

“Having been around the team in my capacity as test and reserve driver this season should help ease the transition, however, and I’m grateful to Mercedes-AMG for finally getting this chance. I can’t wait to get out on track in Moscow.”
