Pagenaud will start ahead of Josef Newgarden, Helio Castroneves, Max Chilton and Charlie Kimball - and the five of them have combined for exactly zero wins at Iowa. Newgarden’s finished second at Iowa the last two years.
Meanwhile practice pacesetter Tony Kanaan rolls off from sixth, ahead of Ed Carpenter and Will Power, who seeks his third straight win.
Ryan Hunter-Reay and the rest of the Andretti quartet will have a tough go of it from 20th (Hunter-Reay), 15th (Carlos Munoz), 17th (Alexander Rossi) and 19th (Marco Andretti).
Mikhail Aleshin is the top Honda in ninth, and defending champion Scott Dixon rolls off from 10th.
