Track president Roger Curtis said Thursday morning that Michigan International Speedway will be add both SAFER barrier and tire packs in time for its June NASCAR weekend.

SAFER barriers will be added to the pit in and pit out walls, while track barriers will be placed in front of the angled wall inside Turn 1, Curtis noted.

In addition, part of the track’s infield grass at the exit of pit road will be paved and serve as both a skid pad and pace car vehicle entry and exit.

Following the track’s NASCAR weekend in mid-August, it will add SAFER barriers to outside walls on the frontstretch, backstretch and the pit tri-oval wall, a MIS press release said.

“The safety of our guests, competitors and staff is our number one priority,” Curtis said. “We will continue to review our facility and provide updates as circumstances warrant.”

MIS is the fastest non-restrictor plate track on the NASCAR circuit. Jeff Gordon holds the NASCAR modern-day qualifying speed there at 206.558 mph, set Aug. 15, 2014.
