Rockets assign C Greg Smith to the D-League.
The acquisition of Marcus Camby made Smith an afterthought, and he’ll get far more experience playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
  • MIN Center #27
Jordan Hill sprained his MCL on Saturday and will be sidelined through the All Star break.
Hill was hurt when he fell during practice, and he’s scheduled to undergo an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. Houston is expected to call up center Greg Smith from the D-League.

Rockets rookie center Greg Smith had two points, three rebounds and four blocks in his debut on Sunday, though he also racked up five personal fouls in 12 minutes.
“We always need physical play, and that’s what Greg brings,” said Kevin McHale. “He’ll body up bigs, he’ll rebound, he’s quick off his feet, and he’s got good hands. Greg is just real young.” It sounds like Houston is ready to make him part of the rotation, which is more bad news for Samuel Dalembert.
  • BKN Small Forward #34
Chase Budinger and Samuel Dalembert (back) are starting in Thursday’s game against the Hornets, but beat writer Jonathan Feigen wrote that Greg Smith and Marcus Morris could “see more minutes.”
This takes a bit of the fun out of Budinger and Dalembert’s starting nods, so proceed with caution. As for the young guys, you’d have to be in a very deep league to take a chance like that.
  • POR Power Forward #54
Patrick Patterson led the Rockets’ bench with nine points and 11 rebounds on Thursday against the Hornets.
Patterson hit just 4-of-16 shots with the Rockets jumbling up their rotation. Marcus Morris scored seven points with five rebounds, a steal, a block, and a three, and Greg Smith added eight points and 10 boards.

The Rockets have waived C Greg Smith.
The former Fresno State big man did not impress the coaching staff enough to earn a spot on the Rockets this season and may return to the Mexican pro team he was playing for before coming in as a training camp body for Houston.
  • Center #4
The Rockets are expected to sign C Greg Smith from the D-League.
Smith was getting some interest around the league as a call-up candidate, but he’ll head back to Houston where he was in training camp prior to getting cut.

    Rockets signed C Greg Smith.
Smith gets a three-year contract with a guaranteed salary for this season and is partially guaranteed for next season. The third season of the deal is a team option. Smith will serve as depth for the Rockets.
  • Center #4
Rockets center Greg Smith was “excused from the team” after missing the bus to Sunday’s walkthrough in Vegas Summer League.
We’re guessing this just means he’s not going to play on Tuesday, but it could also mean his status with the team is in jeopardy. We should know more by training camp.
  • Center #4
Greg Smith (left foot) will not play against the Blazers on Saturday.
He injured his foot on Wednesday and was playing well as the primary backup to Omer Asik. Asik has played 34 minutes per game in the first two contests and should continue to rack up the boards and blocks. Cole Aldrich will be the main backup at center.
