It looks like the gunning two guard Monta Ellis is gone from Milwaukee, but they are about to replace him with another inconsistent and inefficient player, one they are counting on to improve.
The Bucks are near a multiyear deal with free agent O.J. Mayo, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
Mayo certainly defends better than Ellis, and he is a better three-point shooter hitting 40.7 percent of his shots last season in Dallas. He averaged 15.9 points a game, but his below league average PER of 13.9 speaks to his efficiency.
Or, look at it this way: Memphis didn’t keep him around as a sixth man, then Dallas coach Rick Carlisle has some real frustration with the consistency of Mayo’s effort and preparation last season.
We will see what kind of team the Bucks put together and what kind of deal we are talking about. If the Bucks plan is to be bad this year and try and cash in on a deep lottery of talent (a lot of teams have that plan, maybe seven to start the season) then this is a decent stopgap. But as a long-term building block this is a sideways move, at best.
