It’s unusual for a team to waive a player who was an early second round draft pick in the previous season, especially when he still has guaranteed money left on his contract.
But that’s what the Grizzlies have reportedly done with Jamaal Franklin.

Franklin had one year remaining on his deal for the upcoming season at $816,482, which will now be stretched out over the next three seasons for salary cap purposes.
The Grizzlies had all 15 roster spots assigned to players with guaranteed deals for next year before this move, so now they have some flexibility to add somebody else, either in a training camp deal or sometime later in the season.
Franklin was selected with the 41st overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, and averaged just 7.7 minutes per game in 21 appearances during his rookie season.
