The Timberwolves aren’t going to the playoffs this year, so the loss of one of their regular rotation players may not seem all that important on the surface.

But every game is a development opportunity for the team’s young players, and in that regard, losing Shabazz Muhammad for the remainder of the season with a finger injury is in fact somewhat significant.

From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Shabazz Muhammad will undergo surgery on his middle finger and miss the rest of the season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The recovery period for the injury on his shooting hand is expected to be eight weeks, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Muhammad, 22, has made significant strides in his second season for the Wolves, averaging 13.5 points and 4.1 rebounds.

Again, this means nothing for Minnesota’s chances this season. But it’s a lost opportunity for Muhammad to develop during live NBA action, and that makes the injury unfortunate -- if not for the team, than for the player himself.
