SOUTHAMPTON, New York — Round 1 of the 126th U.S. Open resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET after a two-hour delay due to dense fog blanketing the back nine.
The delay began a half-hour after the first groups teed off at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.
Players were held in place for fifteen minutes, then brought into the clubhouse, though practice facilities remained open.
Only 17 golfers were able to tee off their first round before the delay, with eight tied at the top of the leaderboard at even par.
With high winds and a chance of rain already expected, this adds another layer to an already challenging start.
Officials said Wednesday that Thursday’s forecasted wind gusts over 30 miles per hour would be “problematic” for play.
The delay will push back the starts for the favorites, including Rory McIlroy (previously scheduled to go off at 7:52 off the 10th hole) and Scottie Scheffler (previously scheduled to start at 8:14 off the first hole).
