The Knicks and Rick Brunson are finalizing a deal that would make him an assistant on Tom Thibodeau’s coaching staff, according to SNY’s Ian Begley.
Brunson’s playing resume speaks for itself, as he played nine seasons in the NBA. And there’s also a prior connection to Thibodeau, as the elder Brunson was an assistant on Thibs’ coaching staff in both Chicago and Minnesota. But none of that is why this transaction will raise eyebrows. Brunson’s son Jalen, who recently wrapped up the best season of his NBA career, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Knicks are in need of an upgrade at the point guard position, and it has been reported in the past that Jalen Brunson will be one of their primary targets. However, Dallas has made it clear that they’re going to do all that they can to ensure that Brunson remains with the Mavericks, and no other team in the league can offer as much money as Mark Cuban’s team can.
