Browns signed South Carolina State T Alex Taylor.
Taylor (6'8/308) was considered one of the top FCS prospects by analysts, but ultimately went undrafted. Because of his frame -- and because of his perceived “rawness” -- he’s a perfect candidate for the practice squad.

  • NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein compared South Carolina State T Alex Taylor to Vikings T Brian O’Neill in his pre-draft analysis.
Taylor (6'8/308) put up one of the better times in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, clocking in at 5.09 seconds. And in Zierlein’s opinion the South Carolina State standout has the talent of a Day 2 draft pick, but there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to have staying power as a pro. “He will come into camp with some technical savvy to work with as a run blocker, but will need to better time his punch and improve his inside-out positioning in order to be ready to handle diversified rush attacks,” Zierlein wrote. Given the athleticism, it would come as no surprise if a team selected Taylor during Day 3 of next month’s draft. And if his name isn’t called, he won’t lack for suitors on the UDFA market.
  • South Carolina State T Alex Taylor ran the 40-yard dash in 5.09 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.
That’s one of the better times we saw from offensive lineman we saw on Friday. It’s an even more impressive time when you consider that he’s 6-foot-8, 308-pounds. Taylor didn’t show much explosiveness with his 25-inch vertical, and his 4.79 second 20-yard shuttle was middling. Still, Taylor is considered one of the more intriguing FCS prospects, and has a real shot of being drafted this April.
  • South Carolina State redshirt T Alex Taylor accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Taylor is considered one of the better offensive lineman at the “small-school” level, and with 6-foot-9 height and weighing in at 310 pounds, he certainly has an intriguing frame. How he performs in Mobile will go a long way in determining his future draft prospectus.
