The Patriots decided not to pick up the option on Antowain Smith’s contract, making the 31 year-old running back a free agent.
The team was trying to renegotiate a lower deal, but could not reach an agreement by their self-imposed one-week deadline. Belichick wished Smith continued success in the future, meaning he’s not likely to re-sign with the Patriots. Smith was one of 11 Patriots to start in both Super Bowls. He’ll likely catch on as a cheap, goal-line style running back somewhere. The Patriots only other running back on the roster now is Kevin Faulk, who becomes a free agent next month.
