Ravens DE Arthur Jones will compete for the team’s starting left end job in training camp.

Outgoing LE Cory Redding landed in Indy with old Ravens DC Chuck Pagano. Pernell McPhee will be Jones’ primary competition, although McPhee has been primarily a sub-package player who rushes from the interior in nickel looks. Jones is also a better run defender, making him a superior early-down option.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh expects DL Arthur Jones to see snaps at both end and tackle this season.

“He is going to play the defensive end spot and he is competing for the starting job there, and he is also going to play the 3-technique spot,” Harbaugh said. "(He) is going to play a lot of football regardless of where it ends up shaking out.” Jones made one start in 14 games last season, notching 20 tackles.

It sounds as if he could be back soon, though. “Thank you Lord for the amazing news today,” Jones tweeted Friday night. Marcus Spears will fill in at left end for however long Jones is sidelined.

Ravens LE Arthur Jones (illness) is questionable for Week 2 against the Browns.

Jones returned to practice this week and could be on a limited snap count if he avoids being inactive. The Ravens are considering holding him out for precautionary reasons. Marcus Spears could make another start at left end in his absence.

Ravens LE Arthur Jones (illness) could be cleared to practice “soon.”

Jones hasn’t played since the third preseason game, but the Ravens have “no concerns” about his status and he’s on track to resume practicing next week. Marcus Spears started at left end on Thursday night and will continue to fill in until Jones is ready to return.
  • Defensive Lineman

Ravens LE Arthur Jones has been ruled out for Week 1 due to an illness.

Marcus Spears will get the start across from Chris Canty on Thursday night. It’s a downgrade in the pass-rush department, but Spears can hold the point in the run game. Denver is going to struggle for running room in the NFL opener.

Ravens DE Arthur Jones lost roughly 15 pounds this offseason.

Coach John Harbaugh said Jones “looks like he’s in great shape, tremendous shape, looks like he’s trimmed up a little bit.” The younger brother of MMA superstar Jon Bones Jones is entering a contract year and is the favorite to win the starting right end job. Jones was Pro Football Focus’ 13th-best 3-4 defensive end against the run last season and added 4.5 sacks.
