Olson outplayed Troy Smith during the preseason, but had too much working against him in that Smith was the Heisman Trophy winner in 2006 and got a signing bonus as a fifth-round pick. The others were undrafted rookies.

Olson will be Chris Weinke’s backup in Week 17. The 24-year-old former UCLA star has bounced around since going undrafted in April of 2006.

Olson had been signed last week with David Carr and Vinny Testaverde hurting. The move is a strong indication that the Panthers expect both veteran QBs to be healthy Sunday at Green Bay.

This may be an indication that Carolina is prepping for Vinny Testaverde (Achilles) to be inactive against Atlanta and Matt Moore to start. Olson would then back up Moore on game day. David Carr has been ruled out.

A slap in Luke Getsy’s face. Olson was most recently on Carolina’s taxi squad after outplaying, then subsequently being cut in favor of Troy Smith out of Ravens camp. He’s insurance with Alex Smith unlikely to play again in ’07.

Olson has bounced around practice squads in his two seasons, and was passed over for a Week 17 start when the 49ers went with Chris Weinke. At best, he’ll be third on the depth chart next season.

It’s a little surprising that teams are intrigued with Wright, a former monster high school recruit who floundered at the University of Miami. Olson never had a chance to stick behind Alex Smith, Shaun Hill, and J.T. O’Sullivan.

Vince Young finished second. Olson could go as high as the second round in the draft and will compete in the combines with Alabama’s Brodie Croyle and Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst in the second tier of draftable QBs.
