It’s been a disappointing fourth season for Mitchell.

Mitchell called the Patriots ''sensitive’’ saying he got ''under their skin.’' He also blamed his lack of Super Bowl production on Terrell Owens’ big game. The implications are fairly clear: the Eagles told Mitchell to stop yapping before the Super Bowl and he continues to be a pain. He’s not good enough to be a distraction: look for Mitchell to get released.

''He’s running in a straight line fast,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “If we can run just (fly) patterns all day long, he can play. Right now he’s not ready to come out and run pass routes.” Mitchell is losing ground to Marc Boerigter in the battle to be the number three receiver.

The team is upset that Mitchell went against medical advice to avoid knee surgery. ''He would have been very, very competitive to make this football team. It’s going to be tough now, if you’re not in position to compete,’' coach Dick Vermeil said.

We were surprised when Dallas didn’t draft an impact receiver in April. Fred-Ex would battle a long list of no-namers to make the team.

Mitchell, 27, has reportedly gotten his forty time down to 4.5. Clayton expects Fred-Ex to sign with a club at some point during camp.

Mitchell tried out for the club on Sunday. Dallas lacks great depth at receiver, but it’s hard not to agree with this decision.

He’ll have better days, but neither Mitchell nor Todd Pinkston have shown enough consistency to be worth a roster spot this season.

It sounds like he’ll be able to play, and start next Monday night. He’s still a poor fantasy play.

With most of the Eagles starters sitting this one out, Mitchell was the lone bright spot.
