Redskins signed LB Robert Thomas, formerly of the Raiders, to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. He can make another $600K via incentives.
He played just two games last season due to hamstring and knee injuries. The undersized, always injury-prone Thomas is highly unlikely to solve Washington’s woes at strong-side linebacker. H.B. Blades should still be the favorite to start.

Redskins signed sixth-round LB H.B. Blades to a multi-year contract.
Blades lacks top-end size and speed, but enters an ideal situation behind a similar player in starting MLB London Fletcher. Expect special teams production as a rookie, but no immediate fireworks from the Pitt Panther.
  • FA Linebacker
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs indicated Monday that WLB Rocky McIntosh will likely need surgery on his injured left knee.
McIntosh, arguably Washington’s young defender, will likely miss the rest of the season if so. The Washington Post expects Randall Godfrey and H.B. Blades to split action in McIntosh’s spot on the weak side moving forward.
  • WAS Linebacker
H.B. Blades would be the Redskins’ starting strong-side linebacker if the season began today.
Blades has proven to be a versatile and valuable reserve, but he could be a big liability on the strong side. Bigger tight ends would be a mismatch for the 5'10/235-pounder in coverage and Blades isn’t a run-stuffing linebacker.

Redskins LB H.B. Blades is week to week after suffering a knee injury in Monday night’s game.
Blades has been limited to special teams duty this season, so it’s not a huge loss if he can’t play in Week 10.

Redskins LB H.B. Blades will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery this week.
One of his ligaments, but not Blades’ ACL, was probably torn or partially torn. Blades, MLB London Fletcher’s main backup, should be back by Week 1.

Redskins LB H.B. Blades (knee) returned to practice Thursday.
Blades is the Skins’ top backup at middle and weak-side linebacker. If WLB Rocky McIntosh goes down, Blades will be worth grabbing in IDP leagues.

Redskins SLB Marcus Washington (hamstring, hip) has resumed practicing.
H.B. Blades did fine spelling Washington against the Saints in Week 2, but will go back to the bench. Washington provides more upside as a blitzer.
  • TEN Linebacker #98
Brian Orakpo lost snaps to H.B. Blades last week because the Redskins didn’t want Orakpo defending Jeremy Shockey.
“It was for that game,” said coach Jim Zorn. Orakpo was a defensive end in college and is still developing as an outside linebacker. Zorn admitted the No. 13 overall pick is wearing down, but Orakpo has had an excellent rookie season with 40 tackles and seven sacks already.
