49ers CB Jason Verrett tore his Achilles at practice Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season.
The team announced the injury on their account. Verrett just can’t catch a break. He’s played only 20 games in the last five seasons and has suffered several serious injuries. A torn Achilles at 31 is generally a career-ender in NFL terms. We’ll see how much desire Verrett has to work his way back, but this is devastating for him.

  • Cornerback
49ers activated CB Jason Verrett (knee) from the reserve/PUP list.
At the start of the season, Verrett was still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in Week 1 of the 2021 season. The 49ers played it safe and sent him to the PUP list, giving him extra time to work his way back. In 2020, Verrett stayed mostly healthy and logged two interceptions plus seven pass defenses. He will likely be eased into the lineup for his first game of the 2022 season.

  • HOU Safety #20
49ers designated S Jimmie Ward (hamstring) to return from injured reserve.
Kyle Shanahan said that both Ward and Logan Verrett (knee) would practice Wednesday and start their three-week timetable to work back from injured reserve. The 49ers have done pretty well on defense without both players as Talanoa Hufanga has taken a major jump in his second season. Ward’s return should only bolster the secondary further.

49ers placed CB Jason Verrett (knee) on the reserve/PUP list.
John Lynch told reporters that they were just “being safe” with Verrett as he attempts to come back from a torn ACL suffered in Week 1 of last season. He will miss the first four games of the season. San Francisco invested heavily in corner depth these past two offseasons and should be in a good spot as Verrett gets healthy. The team also placed DT Kalia Davis on the reserve/non-football injury list, and he will also miss at least four weeks.

  • Cornerback
49ers placed CB Jason Verrett (knee) on the active/PUP list.
Verrett had a bounce-back 2020 after dealing with injuries for several years, but a torn ACL ended his 2021 season in Week 1. Nearly a year removed from the injury, it is a small concern he is not ready to go. Verrett coming back healthy would be a big boost to the secondary.

  • Cornerback
    49ers re-signed CB Jason Verrett to a one-year contract.
Verrett has been one of the most injured players in the league over the past decade. Since 2016, he has appeared in just 20 games, the bulk of which came in 2020. In that lone healthy season, Verrett was credited with seven pass defenses and added two interceptions. Despite the injury history, he was still a great cornerback in coverage and an asset against the run, totaling 60 combined tackles and a pair of TFLs. A torn ACL limited him to one game in 2021. If he can stay healthy, Verrett still has the talent of an above-average cornerback.

  • Cornerback
49ers CB Jason Verrett suffered a torn ACL in Week 1 and will miss the remainder of the season.
Verett has a brutal injury history and appeared in just six games from 2016 to 2019. He was finally healthy in 2020 and made the most of his good fortune. Verett defended seven passes and notched two interceptions across 13 games last year. He should be able to return in time for training camp in 2022 if further testing reveals no other complications, but his injury woes will limit his opportunities to earn a starting role.

  • Cornerback
    49ers re-signed CB Jason Verrett to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
After playing just 67 snaps across the 2017-2019 seasons thanks to horrible injury luck and brutal ailments, Verrett had a huge bounce-back year with the Niners under DC Robert Saleh. Verrett started all 13 games he appeared in as a 29-year-old and graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 8 cornerback last season. Verrett has always had the talent; staying on the field has been the problem. He’s betting on himself again and can earn up to $6.5 million.

  • Cornerback
49ers declared QB C.J. Beathard, CB Jason Verrett, LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, DL Dee Ford, OL Tom Compton, and TE George Kittle as inactive for Week 2 against the Jets.
The 49ers re-signed Verrett this offseason after he missed all but one game last year due to a knee injury. Verrett was inactive for Week 1 as well so the 49ers likely won’t miss a beat without him. San Francisco should have no problem containing a depleted Jets receiving unit.

  • Cornerback
    49ers re-signed Jason Verrett to a one-year contract.
Verrett lasted just one game before landing on IR last year. Knee injuries have derailed him the past four seasons, limiting Verrett to just six total appearances. Verrett is a former Pro Bowler that’s still only 28, but he’s a longshot to return to his pre-injury form.
