Weeks signed with the 49ers last offseason and was a pending free agent. General manager John Lynch announced the deal on Tuesday. The contract terms are not yet disclosed, but the 40-year-old long snapper remains year-to-year, as well are.

Weeks’ signing ends an era. NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson reports that Weeks is the “longest-tenured player in [Texans] franchise history.” He fills a need for the 49ers, who released C/LS Taybor Pepper just hours ago.

An organization is only as good as its long snapper, which is why the February signing of Weeks, a 14-year veteran of the league, is such a critical move. Weeks will turn 38 in two weeks, but age is just a number when it comes to one of the league’s most coveted positions. With Weeks now back in the building, the Texans can turn their attention to secondary assets like TE Dalton Schultz and CB Steven Nelson.

Sometimes the snap goes short, but other times it goes long, well longer than a normal snap. That’s when you call on Jon Weeks, who has been doing this job of snapping balls at this precise lengthy distance for the Texans since the 2010 season. Until such a time exists where he fails at snapping the ball at this precise distance, going either longer or shorter than required, it’s likely he’ll continue to be employed by the Texans.

2022 will be Weeks’ 13th season with the Texans. It’s a one-year deal for the veteran long snapper. It’s Weeks’ third consecutive season signing a single-year deal to return to Houston.

When the snap most go farther than a regular snap — which is short — Weeks will do it. Snaps that are longer than a normal distance have been handled in Houston by Weeks since 2010.

No pun intended. Houston will give their snapper of deep snaps a new deal once the free agency period begins, per the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson. Weeks has started a team-high 160-straight weeks.

The deal includes a $255,000 signing bonus. Weeks, 26, played his college ball at nearby Baylor and has been Houston’s long snapper for the past two seasons.
