The team canceled plans to cut DT Myles Wade following Da’Quan Bowers’ Achilles injury. Jefferson was just signed earlier in the week after a tryout at Buccaneers minicamp.

Jefferson showed enough at Tampa’s recent rookie minicamp that the coaching staff -- which has strong ties to LSU -- decided to keep him for a longer look. If he gets to training camp, Jefferson will compete with Brett Ratliff and fellow undrafted free agent Zach Collaros for the Bucs’ third-string job.

Jefferson was invited to rookie tryouts and was apparently good enough to warrant a longer look. The former LSU standout was not highly regarded heading into April’s draft, especially after a poor performance in the BCS title game after which he questioned the team’s gameplan. In addition, he was involved in a bar fight in August that resulted in a simple battery charge and a four-game suspension. Jefferson will compete with Brett Ratliff for the No. 3 job.
