Denver still likes the LSU product’s chances of developing into a quality backup.

He’s a strong candidate for the practice squad if someone doesn’t grab him first.

Denver sent Mauck home from practice early Saturday, prompting many to wonder if he was cut. Instead, he’ll be the No. 3 QB behind Jake Plummer and Brad Van Pelt.

Mauck was let go by the Broncos earlier this week and opted to join Tennessee’s practice squad instead of Denver’s.

Mauck was on his way to New York to try out for the Jets Monday when he got the news. He’s the team’s No. 3 quarterback.

He replaced Billy Volek late in the game and looked competent. It’s unlikely he’ll start next week because Steve McNair could return and Billy Volek can probably return from a concussion.

The Co-National Champ had another year of eligibility, but wasn’t getting any younger (he’s 25). Denver will be a tough spot to win a No. 3 QB role.

All four players will remain with the team. Mauck will battle for the No. 3 quarterback job, while Payton will try to be the No. 3 running back.

He took most of the reps at Wednesday’s practice, not Billy Volek. ‘If Steve can’t go, I gave Matt the reps and we’ll just see what happens,’' coach Jeff Fisher said. “As it relates to Billy, we know what Billy can do; Billy has done a great job for us as a reliever.’’It’s uncertain who would start, but the Titans obviously want to see if Mauck can be their backup next year. Either Volek or McNair won’t be on the team.
