The 49ers have brought back one of their core special teams players.
Wide receiver Kassim Osgood has re-signed with San Francisco, the team said Friday.
Osgood takes the roster spot of quarterback Josh Johnson, who was released. With Johnson off the roster, Blaine Gabbert is the only backup to Colin Kaepernick. The Niners also do not have a quarterback on the practice squad.
The 49ers waived Osgood two days ago to sign safety Ray Ventrone, another player known for his special teams skill.
A long-time coverage ace, the 34-year-old Osgood has appeared in four games for the 49ers this season, playing 69-of-107 special teams snaps (64.5 percent). The club has credited him with two tackles and two assists on special teams.
