Brian Dawkins aims high in his new role

Former NFL safety Brian Dawkins excelled on the field. He now wants to excel off the field.

Officially rejoining the Eagles as a member of the scouting department, Dawkins aspires to do a lot more than that.

It’s not just scouting,” Dawkins said, via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’m trying to grasp the whole gambit of football operations -- how a team is run. I’m learning about the scouting part and the terminology and all those things. . . . I want to learn everything about running a football team.”

Dawkins will be based in Colorado, and he said he’s willing to do the non-glamorous work that scouting entails. He’s willing to do it in order to climb into something, as he put it, “bigger.”

“I don’t know what ‘bigger’ is, but ‘bigger’ is not where I’m standing right now,” Dawkins said. “So whatever ‘bigger’ is, that’s what I’m pushing for.”

If he performs in scouting like he did as a player, he won’t have to push for bigger. Bigger will come.
