The officials working last week’s Packers-Jaguars game have plenty of work to do.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the NFL identified 16 missed calls during the game. The Jaguars were apparently unhappy with the officiating, including a missed defensive holding call on the Packers that would have given the Jaguars first-and-goal.
That sounds terrible, although it may not be quite as bad as it sounds. After all, there are hundreds of things the officials have to be looking for during a game. To identify 16 things that they should have seen but didn’t after going through video of the game slowly after the fact isn’t to say it’s realistic to think the officials could have identified all 16 of those things at the time.
The NFL does not release to the public a full list of missed calls, but it does allow the teams to ask about questionable calls, and the officiating office tells teams which of those calls were wrong. Until the NFL starts releasing that information, we really don’t know how many missed calls are identified in most games. But we’d hope it’s fewer than 16.
