Ravens tender Will Hill at lowest level

The Ravens landed safety Will Hill before last season because of his penchant for off-field trouble and then saw him play well for them after serving a six-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

They appear to be gambling that his off-field issues will make for a weak market as a restricted free agent this offseason. Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Hill received an original round tender from the Ravens, which means that the team will be due no compensation for the former undrafted free agent if he signs elsewhere.

Hill will be in line to make $1.542 million with the Ravens if he signs the tender, although he’ll likely see if anyone offers him a better deal and if the Ravens match it before moving in that direction. The chances of that happening probably aren’t helped by the fact that he has an active warrant in New Jersey for failure to pay child support. Child support payments have been a problem for Hill since he was with the Giants, as have drug issues that led to two other four-game suspensions before last year’s six-game ban.

Should other teams be more turned off by that history than the Ravens were, Baltimore should have a starting safety back at a very reasonable price for the 2015 season.
