Wide receiver Reggie Wayne wasn’t at Patriots practice Saturday.
It sounds like he won’t be at any other Patriots practices either. Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that she’s been told that Wayne “will not be there” after the team makes the cut to 53 players on Saturday afternoon.
While that’s not a great surprise given the way Wayne looked in the final weeks of last season for the Colts, the Patriots did guarantee $450,000 of Wayne’s salary two weeks ago. That’s an expensive tryout for the team, although Bill Belichick has never been one for finding a reason to hold onto a player that he didn’t think could play for the team.
If Wayne is gone, it may be a good sign for Aaron Dobson’s chances of making the team as he, Jalen Saunders and Chris Harper were the only other wideouts on the roster behind Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and the PUP-listed for all of the preseason Brandon LaFell.
Wayne could catch on somewhere else, but the struggles last season and his brief stay with the Patriots don’t do much to suggest there’s a lot left in the tank.
