Bills head coach Chan Gailey has traditionally used a 4-3 defense as a head coach. Bills G.M. Buddy Nix comes from San Diego, where the 3-4 is used with success. Gailey is open to trying something different.
“I don’t want to sit here and say that we’re going to do this and that,’' Gailey said Tuesday. “But I know one thing, I’m much more open to the 3-4 than I used to be because I know what a pain it is to go against it every week.’'
We can’t think of a roster less suited to play a 3-4 defense in the league. Buffalo’s group is full of fast, undersized defenders. The team’s defensive line would especially be out of position.
Buffalo’s defense is far ahead of the the team’s offense, and held up well considering all the injuries it had last year.
Changing the scheme could make a difficult transition for Gailey even more painful.
