Raiders linebacker Sam Williams is expected to return from labrum sugery on October 17th.
Williams is a key member to Oakland’s special teams.

Raiders linebacker Sam Williams will play his first game of the season today.
He had labrum surgery during training camp. He’ll play mostly on special teams.

Labrum surgery will not keep linebacker Sam Williams out for the year, coach Norv Turner said.
The estimate for his recovery is six weeks, “if that, depending on how it goes,” Turner said, adding that Williams won’t be placed on IR.

Raiders starting OLB Sam Williams will miss the 2005 season with a torn ACL.
Williams has yet to finish a season in his three-year career. Grant Irons steps into the starting role, but rookie third-rounder Kirk Morrison could end up earning more playing team.

Robert Thomas has taken over as Oakland’s starting strong-side linebacker.
He replaces Sam Williams, an Al Davis gem that never panned out. Thomas, a former first-round pick out of UCLA, is athletic and good in ball pursuit, but much smaller than Williams. Neither has been great against the run.

Raiders LB Robert Thomas was carted off the practice field Tuesday with a knee injury.
There is no word on the severity yet. Thomas had lost his starting job to Ricky Brown this summer. A serious injury may allow Al Davis’ six-year pet project, Sam Williams, to make the team once again.

Raiders re-signed linebacker Robert Thomas to a three-year, $6 million contract. The deal includes a $1.5 million signing bonus.
The ’02 first-round pick was a late bloomer but serves as a valuable nickel linebacker in Rob Ryan’s defense. There’s an outside chance he’ll be competing with Sam Williams on the strong side in training camp.

Sam Williams is expected to start at strong-side linebacker in ’06.
Finally some Raiders news! Williams missed last season with a torn ACL. Oakland’s LB corps, which appears to have Danny Clark on the bench, should be improved this season.

Raiders SLB Sam Williams (ankle) is unlikely to play in Week 2.
Williams missed practice all week. Starting CB Nnamdi Asomugha (foot) will also likely be out. Oakland’s defense could be in trouble Sunday.
  • FA Linebacker
Raiders SLB Jon Alston was added to the injury report Saturday with an illness.
Alston is listed as questionable. He’s suffered two concussions since Oct. 11 and it’s unknown if this “illness” is related. Alston was splitting time with Sam Williams on the strong side.
