In their 11th Olympic appearance in men’s field hockey, Argentina won its first gold medal in that sport.

Argentina defeated Belgium 4-2 in the gold medal match, with Agustin Mazzilli’s goal with 16 seconds remaining sealing the victory. Belgium scored the first goal of the match less than three minutes in, but Argentina would go on to score the next three goals of the match. While Belgium didn’t get gold, their silver is the first medal in men’s field hockey for the country since 1920.

Germany took bronze, as they defeated Netherlands 4-3 in a shootout after the match finished regulation tied at one goal apiece.
