In each of the four Summer Olympics in which women’s wrestling has been held, Japan has taken a medal in the women’s flyweight (48 kg) division.

Eri Tosaka became the latest to medal Wednesday, as she took gold by defeating Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan in the gold medal match by the final score of 3-2. Japan’s last two medals in the flyweight division have been gold, with Hitomi Obara taking gold in London four years ago.

Stadnik, who now has three Olympic medals in her career, has been on the short end of both of those gold medal matches.

Taking bronze were Sun Yanan of China, who won her nation’s first medal in the flyweight division, and Bulgaria’s Elitsa Yankova. Yankova’s medal is Bulgaria’s first in any event in Rio.
