The Malaysia Airlines tragedy was remembered at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow on Wednesday night.

The Malaysian athlete delegation entered Celtic Park wearing black armbands for the Parade of Nations. A moment of silence was also held.

Alex Salmond, the First Minister of Scotland, said almost a third of the 298 victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down over Ukraine on July 17, were citizens of the Commonwealth.

“Please rise now, please stand, as we observe a moment’s silence to express our condolences and above all our solidarity with the loved ones of all of those of every nationality who lost their lives,” Salmond said during the ceremony.

The Commonwealth Games Federation president, Prince Imran, is Malaysian.
