Michael Johnson shared his thoughts on Allyson Felix and Trayvon Bromell and reflected on his only Olympic event where he didn’t cross the finish line first, in an interview with NBC Olympics track and field analyst Ato Boldon for the IAAF.
Johnson and Felix could be intertwined over the next year, as Felix could attempt a 200m-400m double at the Rio Olympics, bringing to mind Johnson’s memorable double gold performance at Atlanta 1996.
Bromell, the Worlds 100m co-bronze medalist, is a rising Baylor junior. Johnson also went to Baylor and said he met Bromell for the first time this year.
Johnson also mentioned Usain Bolt, who has said he’d like to lower his 200m world record from 19.19 seconds to under 19 seconds. Johnson still thinks that he could have run under 19 seconds himself, though Johnson’s best time was 19.32.
On the victory lap after his final Olympic race in Sydney 2000, Johnson said into the camera that all of his Olympic medals were gold. No silver. No bronze.
While that’s true, Johnson failed to make the final of his first Olympic race. At age 24, Johnson entered the Barcelona 1992 Olympics as the reigning World 200m champion.
