Nathan Adrian: I was invited to go out with Ryan Lochte in Rio

Swimming - 16th FINA World Championships: Day Fifteen

KAZAN, RUSSIA - AUGUST 08: Ryan Lochte (L) and Nathan Adrian of the United States celebrate winning the gold medal in a new world record time of 3:23.05 in the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay Final on day fifteen of the 16th FINA World Championships at the Kazan Arena on August 8, 2015 in Kazan, Russia. Ryan Lochte was accompanied by Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and James Feigen on night of the infamous gas station incident at the Rio Olympics. But he was nearly joined by a fourth U.S. swimmer.

Five-time Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian was invited, but he declined.

“It was already 2 a.m. and I was way too tired so I told them I’m just not into going out right now,” Adrian said to Robbie Tripp of The Huffington Post.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming suspended Lochte for 10 months. Bentz, Conger, and Feigen were suspended for four months.

“I personally felt like [Bentz, Conger, and Feigen] didn’t do anything wrong and didn’t deserve to be left out of any international competition,” Adrian said.

Adrian said that he is “cordial” with Lochte.

“We’re certainly not the best of friends,” Adrian said. “I don’t say that because I don’t like him, we just don’t have a ton to relate about.”
