Shaun White surprises high school girl at prom

Shaun White

Shaun White answered a high school girl’s social media request to be her prom date, and he brought his band with him.

Carly Monzo, a senior at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Flourtown, Pa., launched a video campaign on March 18 asking White to the dance. She never heard from White and ended up going to her prom Friday with a longtime friend, figuring the two-time Olympic champion wouldn’t show.

But she was called on stage, and the curtains dropped. There was White, along with his band, Bad Things.

“I’ve never been speechless in my life,” Monzo told WMMR radio, “and I was speechless.”

The band played -- Monzo is a big fan and knows their songs -- and White and Monzo slow danced.

“He’s such a gentlemen,” Monzo told the radio station. “He helped me down from the stage, took some pictures.”

The crowd started chanting, “Kiss! Kiss!”

“So he gave me a little peck on the cheek,” Monzo told NBC Philadelphia.

White’s appearance was actually planned last month, but only school administrators knew about it at first, according to Philadelphia media reports. Monzo’s parents didn’t find out until Friday morning that he was flying in from Austria to crash the dance.

Monzo said she was so excited afterward that she didn’t go to sleep until 4:30 a.m. Saturday. She’s also proud that her school will now be known for something more than being the alma mater of Anne Hathaway‘s mom.

There were some regrets, though. Her friends asked, did you get his number? No.

“I forgot to ask him what the meaning of life was,” Monzo said. “I couldn’t even get that far. I was just like so overwhelmed. ... I should have got some digits.”

Monzo’s original date bragged that White stole his prom date.
