McClain

The Yankees jettisoned the trio of long-shot righty relievers from major-league camp on Sunday afternoon. They’ll open the regular season at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre as organizational pitching depth.

McClain, 28, was plucked from the Phillies in the minor league portion of the Rule-5 draft in December. He appeared in just one Grapefruit League contest, serving up a solo homer and striking out one in his long inning of work. He’ll begin the season as bullpen depth at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.

McClain is one of the few players selected on Thursday who has MLB experience. It hasn’t been positive, however, as the right-hander owns a career 5.81 ERA in 26 1/3 innings for the Phillies and Mariners. He’ll be organizational depth for the Yankees in 2021.

McClain went down around the start of the month with a right shoulder impingement, but he’s feeling better now. He’s thrown two innings of relief for the Phillies this season while allowing one run.

Enyel De Los Santos will fill the vacancy in the Phillies’ bullpen while McClain is away from the team. McClain has allowed one earned run in two innings of relief so far this season.

McClain was claimed off waivers from the Mariners back in January and will open the season as a member of Philadelphia’s bullpen. The 27-year-old scuffled during his first taste of the majors last year, but he put up some impressive numbers in the minors.

McClain had been designated for assignment last week. The 27-year-old will try to win a spot in the Phillies’ bullpen, although he has options left.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Nick Margevicius. McClain really struggled during his brief time in the majors in 2019 and should pass through waivers.
