Eddie Howe has left Newcastle United after five years in charge at St. James’ Park, reversing course after he had previously chosen to stay on at the Premier League club at the end of last season.

Howe famously led Newcastle to the club’s first major trophy in 70 years when the Magpies lifted the League Cup in 2025. That moment was supposed to be just the start of the good times at Newcastle, with the club’s Saudi Arabian owners pushing the project forward with Howe the hero at the helm.
Instead, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have all left the club for a combined $390 million in under 18 months, and now captain Bruno Guimaraes appears set on joining them as he attempts to force a move to Premier League champions Arsenal this summer.

It is expected that German coach Matthias Jaissle will replace Howe in short order, with the 2026-27 season just over three weeks away. Jaissle is currently the head coach of Saudi side Al-Ahli.
