FA to investigate Aston Villa pitch invasion after Pulis calls it “disgraceful”

There hasn’t been much to cheer about for Aston Villa fans, so when they finally did get something exciting, they naturally took it a bit too far.

Villa fans celebrated their FA Cup quarterfinal win over West Bromwich Albion by running onto the pitch at Villa Park a bit early, holding up the match in injury time before storming the field again after the final whistle. According to the BBC, the FA will now investigate the situation in an attempt to identify those involved with the fracas, mainly the early one that couldn’t wait for the final whistle. Seats were also reportedly thrown from the West Brom end.

A statement by the West Midlands police confirmed that they are investigating the incident and their undertaking “be supporting the FA to identify people involved in pitch invasions.” The report also says both clubs will actively participate.

Both parties condemned the fan activity following the match. West Brom manager Tony Pulis said after the match, “It’s disgraceful. We don’t want to see those scenes.” Aston Villa then released a statement saying:

The club does not condone supporters invading the field of play under any circumstances. We are very disappointed that what should have been a very memorable and proud moment for our fans was marred by the actions of those who could not control themselves. They have let both themselves and their club down. The club extends its sincere apologies to the Football Association, the West Bromwich Albion directors, manager Tony Pulis and all his staff and players.

The BBC also reports the FA could levy a “heavy fine” on Aston Villa for failing to control its supporters.
