Mikel Arteta signs Arsenal contract extension: What does it mean for manager, club, and what did he say?

Mikel Arteta is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, and he’s planning to keep that post through the decade.

Arteta, 44, was hired in December 2019 and led his team to titles in the 2019-20 FA Cup and the 2025-26 Premier League, also guiding Arsenal to the 2025-26 Champions League Final, where they fell to PSG in penalties.

Now he’s signed a deal that will run through the 2029-30 season as he aims to grow the Gunners’ trophy collection.

Arteta finished his playing career at Arsenal from 2011-16 after time with Barcelona’s academy (1997-99), PSG (2001-02), Glasgow Rangers (2002-04), Real Sociedad (2004-05), and Everton (2005-11).

What does new deal say for Arteta, Arsenal?

The Gunners cite his 62.05% winning percentage as the best in club history, pretty impressive for a first time manager whose senior coaching experience was limited to assisting Pep Guardiola at Man City.

Arteta is the dean of Premier League managers — at least in terms of serving at his current club (sorry David Moyes) — and has a chance to have a throwback run as a long-term servant of a Big Six club.

That usually involves a lot of trophies and signature moments. Arsene Wenger has his Invincibles run leading Arsenal to an unbeaten Premier League title. Jurgen Klopp, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Pep Guardiola all won Champions League titles with their clubs.

This moves does seem aimed at putting Arteta in that territory, but it’s not just about the Champions League. Claiming another Premier League title would take Arteta’s legacy to another level.

Arsenal also keep a former player and current champions in their ranks and locked down long-term for any big club who might turn their eyes to the Spaniard. Arteta is, after all, a former Barcelona academy player who also put on the uniform of Paris Saint-Germain.

What did Mikel Arteta say about new Arsenal contract?

from arsenal.com

“It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

“We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together. I’m extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honored to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

“This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.”
