Premier League Sunday recap and highlights: Liverpool levels Arsenal, Sunderland edges Newcastle

Round 17 of Premier League Sunday play had two great matches take place--Newcastle v. Sunderland and Liverpool v. Arsenal.

Steven Fletcher nailed the iron with a volley and Conor Wickham’s header nearly missed, as both men boasted the most notable scoring chances for the Black Cats. A first-half effort from Moussa Sissoko showed the only occasion when the Toons threatened at goal in the first half.

Nonetheless, in the next 45 minutes, young Spanish striker Ayoze Perez was wonderfully thwarted by Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon, and it was midfielder Adam Johnson that propelled his side to the 1-0 victory with his 90th minute finish off the sprung counter attack.

At Anfield, Mathieu Debuchy knotted the scoreline mere seconds after Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho nicked his right-footer off the post to snag the first score of the contest.

Santi Cazorla sent in a cross around the 64th minute, and Olivier Giroud, on the receiving end, managed to covert at the near post, handing the Gunners a 2-1 advantage. Arsene Wenger’s side looked poised to grab three points in this one, until a dramatic 90th-minute header from Martin Skrtel, his head covered in injury-related bandages, cemented the end result.
