Russia finished at the bottom of Group B with just one point from three matches and were embarrassed in their final match, a 3-0 loss to Wales.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Slutsky said it was time a new man took charge.

Slutsky was appointed in 2015 and won his first five matches in charge of the Russian side. However, a poor showing on the world stage seems to have ended his tenure.

Russia was awarded the 2018 World Cup in December of 2010. Since that time, they have appeared in three major tournaments, two European Championships and a World Cup. They have compiled a record of W1, D4, L4 in those competitions, failing to advance out of their group each time.

With a country that has high hopes of impressing as the World Cup hosts in two years time, there is still plenty of work to be done to make Russia a competitive side able to make a deep tournament run.
