Less about minnows than monsters

The expanded field is going to be a topic of conversation this tournament, as the group of 48 teams certainly brings in some traditionally-weaker foes for the big boys. But Curacao’s capitulation was more about what happened once Germany found its third goal. It’s such work to hang with a big-name team like Germany, one who can send waves of world-class attackers at a team which isn’t solid at each of the 11 positions on the field — let alone in their subs. Curacao’s equalizer was a great moment but it was also well-earned by the team. Germany retaking the lead obviously didn’t help things but it was the pre-halftime Kai Havertz penalty that sent the Blue Wave back into the ocean. They had come back from one goal down but two against this relentless pressure? The weight of it seemed too much for Curacao against world-class ball movers like Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. Back to the subs, Germany’s new blood entered with vigor and showed their depth of class. Good night, and good luck.

Full time — Germany 7-1 Curacao

Curacao just ran out of steam after a spirited start and Germany did not stop coming for goals.

GOAL! Germany 7-1 Curacao

Havertz gets his second and first from the run of play.

Goretzka forces a turnover and Undav grabs the ball to send Havertz in to the box.

He tries to beat the keeper and the ball takes a big dip off a lunging defender’s boot to make its way inside the far post.

GOAL! Germany 6-1 Curacao

Denis Undav gets on the scoresheet, as the ex-Brighton man scores his seventh goal in 10 caps.

Kimmich brings the ball across goal and defers with a surprise cutback pass that Undav slashes past a defender on the line.

GOAL! Germany 5-1 Curacao

Nathaniel Brown looks to have just stayed onside while spinning to strike a gorgeous side volley past Room for 5-1.

Assist to recent sub Denis Undav.

A dead ball from the left side is headed by Leandro Bacuna and Neuer leaps but pulls his hand back as the ball is just a bit too high to pull this score to 4-2.

GOAL! Germany 4-1 Curacao

It’s Jamal Musiala, who was wonderful in the first half and deserved to be on the score sheet.

Kimmich finds Musiala’s run into the box and Room can’t get low fast enough to stop the ball from reaching the inside of the far post.

Halftime — Germany 3-1 Curacao

Curacao got their moment with the equalizer and it was a terrific “why we watch” moment for neutrals, let alone the Blue Wave.

But Germany is giving a “Why we win” performance, as Nagelsmann’s men have 71% possession and turned it into 16 shots with four on target in the first 45.

Nmecha has a goal and drew the penalty as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are enjoying the occasion.

GOAL! Germany 3-1 Curacao

Room cannot stop Kai Havertz, whose stuttering run-up gets the keeper going the wrong way.

Nmecha goes down in the heart of the box and Riechedly Bazoer knows he’s caught the German.

Nmecha makes a meal of it to make sure the referee sees it but penalty is an easy call.

GOAL! Germany 2-1 Curacao

This time Schlotterbeck beats Room with room to spare late in the first half, nodding Nathaniel Brown’s service home for 2-1..

The Dortmund man darts toward the front post and has as much time as he likes to turn the ball a few yards to the right of the keeper.

38th minute.

Eloy Room keeps it level

Nico Schlotterbeck gets on the end of a corner kick and tries to loop it over Miami FC goalkeeper Eloy Room.

The ex-Columbus keeper isn’t fooled and slaps it over the bar for a second Germany corner from the right side.

This one is punched away by Room.

GOAL! Germany 1-1 Curacao

Absolute scenes!

Curacao break up the middle and get on the end of two loose balls, the second a bounding shot that takes a turn off a defender to beat Manuel Neuer and tie the game at one!

It’s FC Zurich’s Livano Comenencia who has the first World Cup goal for the smallest nation to ever reach the men’s tournament.

GOAL! Germany 1-0 Curacao

Eloy Room is helpless as Germany turn early dominance into a goal.

Felix Nmecha works a 1-2 with Florian Wirtz and snaps a spinning shot that curls inside the far post.

Gorgeous opener inside of six minutes.
