The 36-year-old Collins signed a minor league deal with the Rockies in 2020 but then opted out of the COVID-shortened season and never showed back up in 2021, and he served as a minor league pitching coach with the Phillies in 2024. The 5-foot-7 lefty had a 3.60 ERA in 275 appearances from 2011-19, most of them coming with the Royals.

Collins had been in camp with the Rockies on a minor league deal and was set to report to the team’s satellite camp on Monday. However, he’s decided against going through with pitching this year. With the Marlins’ outbreak in the background, it will be interesting if we see more opt-outs coming.

Collins posted a 3.12 ERA in nine appearances with the Cubs early last summer, and then signed with the Reds in August after he refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa. He’ll have a chance to win one of the last spots in the Colorado bullpen this spring if he shows well in the Cactus League.

The left-hander was designated for assignment on Friday, but passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as organizational bullpen depth for the Cubs.

The move clears a spot on the roster for Derek Holland. It’s the second time this season that Collins has been designated for assignment.

Collins gets the DFA so that the Cubs can add prospect Adbert Alzolay to the 40 and 25-man roster. The 29-year-old appeared in eight games with the Cubs; registering a 3.52 ERA and 4/3 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings. If someone doesn’t claim Collins off of waivers, he’ll have a chance to pitch at Triple-A Iowa, or he could become a free agent.
