Will Craig went 0-for-4 and made the worst defensive play in major league history Thursday against the Cubs.
As you’ve surely seen by now, Craig, playing first, tried to chase Javier Baez back home after getting pulled slightly off the bag on Erik Gonzalez’s throw on a routine grounder to third. Chaos ensued, allowing a runner to score from second and Baez to reach second. It would have been an absurd play with none or one out, but what made it extra special was that with two outs, all Craig had to do was stand in the baseline for eternity (or, better yet, just tag first base) and the inning was over no matter what anyone on the Cubs did. Though the play could hardly be termed anything but an error, it was ruled a hit for Baez, because mental errors aren’t errors for some reason.
