Grotz was forced to exit Monday’s Grapefruit League game due to elbow soreness, but the initial feeling is that the injury isn’t serious. The 28-year-old was hoping to make a positive impression as a non-roster invitee this spring, but he’ll have to wait for his next opportunity.

Grotz did feel better after the game, for what that’s worth. He has undergone tests and will have more tests Tuesday before receiving a diagnosis. Grotz is a non-roster invitee in Red Sox camp.

Grotz signaled for the dugout after throwing a pitch, which obviously isn’t a promising sign. The Red Sox should provide an update soon. The 28-year-old was rocked in his brief time with the Mariners last year, but he’s posted good numbers in the minors in the past. Hopefully it’s not a major injury.

Grotz had an ugly 7.30 ERA in 24 2/3 innings of relief with the Mariners between 2019-2020, but he’s posted impressive numbers in the upper minors and may have a real shot of claiming a spot in Boston’s bullpen.

Grotz has allowed 12 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings of relief this season at the major league level. The 27-year-old right-hander is now officially off the Mariners’ 40-man roster.
