Schugel

Schugel was released by the Mets last August after surrendering 15 runs (14 earned) with a 21/13 K/BB ratio across 22 2/3 innings at Triple-A Syracuse. The 32-year-old righty last appeared in the majors back in 2017 with the Pirates.

The D’Backs are still due a player to be named later from the White Sox, as well. Schugel had a nice year at Double-A in 2012 but really struggled in his first taste of Triple-A in 2013, posting a 7.05 ERA over 19 starts. He was not ranked among the Angels’ top-10 prospects recently by Baseball Prospectus.

Schugel had been serving as the long man in the Pirates bullpen, but with Jeff Locke shifting to that role he became expendable. Expect to see him again at some point during the second half of the season.

Schugel holds a 3.94 ERA and 41/13 K/BB ratio over 48 relief innings this season. He’ll be used in the middle of games.

Schugel has been out all month because of discomfort in his upper right arm, near his throwing shoulder. The 27-year-old reliever owns a decent 3.63 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 46/13 K/BB ratio in 52 innings this season out of the Pittsburgh bullpen.

Schugel is merely dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder. He’ll be fine for spring training, barring a setback.
