Panthers FS Jordan Pugh has been ruled out for Week 17 against the Saints.

Both Pugh and DT Andre Neblett will miss Sunday’s game as they continue to deal with post-concussion issues. Ogemdi Nwagbuo replaces Neblett along the defensive front while Jonathan Nelson provides depth behind Charles Godfrey and Sharrod Martin at safety.

Panthers DT Jason Shirley has a sack in each of three games since being promoted from the practice squad in early December.

Shirley, rookie Frank Kearse, and second-year pro Andre Neblett have been a boon to the run defense as well. Despite losing rookie starters Terrell McClain and Sione Fua, the Panthers have improved to 21st in run defense, allowing just 95.6 yards per during a 4-1 stretch.

NFL suspended Panthers DT Andre Neblett four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.

A former undrafted free agent out of Temple, the 24-year-old Neblett wound up playing a significant role in a dreadful Carolina interior defensive line last season, even starting four games down the stretch. He figures to open 2012 on the reserve/suspended list. Neblett will be eligible for reinstatement in Week 5, so the Panthers could decide then whether to keep him around.

    Patriots signed DT Andre Neblett.

As beat writer Jeff Howe points out, Neblett didn’t go to Rutgers but he did spend the offseason in Greg Schiano’s Bucs program. Neblett has three career sacks while appearing in 30 games for the Panthers between 2010-12. He’ll be a body as the Patriots attempt to replace Vince Wilfork.
