After sharing in team victory but individual disappointment, Sam Burns now turns his attention to a title defense at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Burns was expected to be a potential standout at Quail Hollow but struggled in team play alongside friend and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. A Sunday tie against Hideki Matsuyama left him with an 0-3-2 record for the week, taking just one point out of a possible five while the U.S. cruised to a 17.5-12.5 victory overall.
Burns likely wasn’t sweating his individual tally during the team celebrations Sunday night, and now it’s a short trip and quick turnaround to the Country Club of Jackson where a year ago he held off fellow Presidents Cup rookie Cameron Young (along with veteran Nick Watney) for the second of his four PGA Tour victories. With many of the bigger names (including Young) watching from home this week as the Tour makes its second official stop of the 2022-23 season, Burns is listed as a clear favorite to successfully defend his title.
Other notables among the favorites include Sahith Theegala, Davis Riley, Denny McCarthy and Taylor Montgomery, all of whom will be looking to win their first Tour title this week in Mississippi.
