Dickson made it back to the big leagues with the Cardinals after nearly a decade between major-league appearances earlier this season, allowing three runs over two innings across a pair of appearances, before being designated for assignment and sent outright to Triple-A Memphis earlier this month. He’ll test the free agent waters in search of a new opportunity.

The right-hander was designated for assignment on Monday and went unclaimed on waivers. Dickson allowed three runs over two frames in the only appearances he made for the Cardinals this season.

The move clears a spot for Andrew Miller’s return from the injured list. Dickson was called up to the majors last week for the first time since 2012 and allowed three runs over two innings of work.

Dickson, 36, will have a chance to pitch in the majors for the first time since 2012, and was recently signed by the Cardinals after spending the last eight seasons with the Orix Buffaloes. He’s a fun story, but not one that offers any fantasy relevance.

The 36-year-old has spent the last eight seasons with the Orix Buffaloes, compiling a 49-58 record with a 3.32 ERA. Dickson spent time with the Cardinals in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, making eight appearances.

“When you have a younger ‘pen, you don’t want to confuse the issue,” said Matheny. “When you have guys who are still trying to find their role ... right now we have everybody exactly where we want to be.” Lynn, McClellan and Boggs all have previous experience as starters, but if Matheny sticks with his current plan (and the Cards don’t sign Roy Oswalt), a late injury to one of their starters could push 27-year-old Brandon Dickson into the rotation.

Dickson surrendered seven hits and five earned runs in four Grapefruit League innings. The righty is doubtful to climb to the big leagues this year before September. Infielders Zack Cox and Pete Kozma were also optioned to the minors.

Dickson made just two appearances during his nearly two-week stay with the big club, allowing one unearned run over 2 1/3 innings while striking out one and walking none. He’ll likely be back with the Cardinals at some point later this summer.

Dickson really struggled in his recent stint with the Cards, allowing six runs -- five earned -- over four innings. He should be back next month when rosters expand.

Whoever gets the call will be filling in for Jamie Garcia, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday with a shoulder strain. Dickson has the edge in major league experience, but Kelly has a solid 2.86 ERA and 45/21 K/BB ratio in 12 starts with Triple-A Louisville this year. Both can be avoided in most fantasy leagues, though.
