Goodwin last appeared in the majors during the 2021 season when he got into 71 games for the White Sox. He played in the independent Mexican League and also in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League last year.

Goodwin has opted for free agency, rather than accept an outright minor-league assignment, after being removed from the White Sox’ 40-man roster. The 31-year-old outfielder hit .221/.319/.374 with 33 runs scored, eight home ruins, 29 RBI and one stolen base across 271 plate appearances last season.

He’s presumably getting a routine day of rest. Gavin Sheets will start at first base and Brian Goodwin will function as the DH.

Goodwin is 3-for-22 with no RBI in his last eight appearances. He’s been starting regularly of late with Leury Garcia and now Adam Engel on the IL -- he even started against a lefty on Thursday -- but he’ll need to quickly exit this slump in order to retain his playing time.

Engel is undergoing treatment on his injured right groin and won’t be available on Saturday night. It seems like he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list and should be considered day-to-day for now. Brian Goodwin will handle right field in his absence.

Goodwin opened the 10th inning with his go-ahead two-run blast off of Manuel Rodriguez. The White Sox went on to tack on an additional two runs in the frame -- which were needed after Frank Schwindel blasted a two-run homer to start the home half of the frame. Goodwin finished the afternoon 1-for-2 and is now hitting .246/.331/.465 with seven homers and 21 RBI.
